Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 17, Verse 5

Krishna said

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः।दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ॥17.5॥

aśāstravihitaṃ ghoraṃ tapyante ye tapo janāḥdambhāhaṅkārasaṃyuktāḥ kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ

Meaning

Krishna says some people perform harsh austerities not prescribed by scripture, driven by hypocrisy and ego, and pushed by desire, attachment and a show of strength.

हिंदी में अर्थ

कृष्ण कहते हैं कि कुछ लोग शास्त्र में न बताए गए कठोर तप करते हैं। वे दिखावे और अहंकार से भरे होते हैं, और इच्छा, मोह तथा ज़िद के बल पर ऐसा करते हैं।
